Requirements
Candidates come from a wide range
of academic backgrounds as a result of the interdisciplinary
nature of the Environmental Engineering Sciences program. Minimum
admission requirements are:
- Strong background in
engineering or science with at least a B average (GPA=3.0/4.0)
from the undergraduate upper-division coursework.
- A minimum total (verbal and
quantitative) GRE score of 1100*, with a minimum score of 500
each on the verbal and quantitative sections.
- At least one year (two
semesters or three quarters) of calculus.
- At least one year (two
semesters or three quarters) of chemistry.
- One semester of physics and one semester of biology;
or at least one year (two semesters or three quarters)
of physics; or at least one year (two semesters or
three quarters) of biology.
- All entering students are
expected to be competent with using computers to solve
problems (e.g. use of spreadsheets) and present results (e.g.
use of word processing and presentation software).
- Each applicant must be
accepted by a Faculty Advisor prior to the Department
making an acceptance decision.
*Please note that higher test scores are
required to be competitive for financial assistance.
Who can apply?
Anyone with a Bachelor of Science
degree (or a B.A. in certain circumstances) or its international
equivalent in an appropriate field from an accredited college or
university may apply.
The Graduate Programs Office
maintains an applicant's file for only one year. For applicants
who re-apply, an entire application package must be filled out
with original documentation.

The Department of Environmental
Engineering requires minimum test scores as listed below
for entrance into the Graduate Program:
- Grade Point Average (GPA) =
3.0/4.0
- GRE = 500 Verbal, 500
Quantitative; 1100 Total
- TOEFL = 575 (paper) or 230
(computer)
Graduate Records
Examination
All applicants must take the
Graduate Records Examination (GRE). The Department of Environmental Engineering Sciences may use the Fundamentals of Engineering examination in lieu of the GRE for admitting students into the Non-Thesis Masters degree programs. Applicants with a previous Graduate or Professional degree or equivalent from a regionally accredited U.S. institution may be exempt from the GRE and undergraduate GPA requirements. International Student
Requirements
International Students applying
to the Department of Environmental Engineering Sciences Graduate
Program must:
- have a college-level education
that is equivalent to a four-year U.S. baccalaureate (B.S.)
degree;
- be proficient in reading,
writing and speaking English; as demonstrated by
acceptable Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
and GRE-verbal scores (see above).
An applicant who did not receive
their undergraduate degree from an English-speaking country must
take the TOEFL. Scores must be submitted as part of the
application process. The TOEFL, a comprehensive test of
English-language skills, is given several times during the year at
many locations around the world. TOEFL registration forms can be
obtained outside the United States or by writing to:
